De IBM productivity editors die in Notes/Domino 8 zitten, zijn gebaseerd op code van OpenOffice, de open source office suite. OpenOffice werkt standaard met het Open Document format en dat geldt dus ook voor die IBM Productivity editors. Maar, natuurlijk kunnen ze beiden ook overweg met documenten in Microsofts' document-formaten.

IBM heeft, tijdens het ontwikkelen van de Productivity Editors, best veel kennis opgedaan van OpenOffice. Vandaag maakten IBM en OpenOffice.org bekend, dat IBM vanuit die ervaring actief zal gaan bijdragen aan OpenOffice. Bepaalde verbeteringen die in de IBM Productivity Editors zitten, worden aangeboden aan OpenOffice.org; tevens zullen ontwikkelaars van IBM werken aan de OpenOffice suite. Het lijkt erop dat de samenwerking vanuit IBM Lotus gestalte gegeven wordt, want in de press release is het Mike Rhodin, general manager van IBM Lotus, die commentaar geeft:

"IBM is very pleased to be joining the OpenOffice.org community. We are very optimistic that IBM's contribution of technology and engineering resources will provide tangible benefits to the community membership and to users of OpenOffice.org technology around the world,” said Mike Rhodin, General Manager of IBM's Lotus division. "We're particularly pleased to be teaming with the community to accelerate the rate of innovation in the office productivity marketplace. We believe that this relationship will improve our ability to deliver innovative value to users of IBM products and services. We also believe that the collaboration will lead to an even broader range of ODF-supporting applications (ISO 26300) and solutions that draw from the OpenOffice.org technology."

Sun Microsystems is al langer deelnemer aan OpenOffice.org; Sun is zelfs oprichter van deze organisatie. Dit betekent dat OpenOffice nu, naast Open Source-partijen als Ubuntu, Red Hat en Red Flag, kan rekenen op de actieve steun van twee grote commerciële software-bedrijven.
